Joysticks
What it is
Section titled “What it is”A joystick is a hand-operated flight control used for pitch and roll, often with additional buttons, hats, and triggers.
Where it is used
Section titled “Where it is used”Joysticks are common in combat flight sims, helicopter setups, and general-purpose desktop flying.
Main variants
Section titled “Main variants”- desktop sticks
- center-mounted sticks
- side sticks
- grips with twist yaw or separate rudder control
How it works
Section titled “How it works”The grip moves through a gimbal or cam-based mechanism, with sensors reading axis position. The internal mechanism matters more than the shell because centering feel and smoothness have a huge effect on precision.
What matters when choosing
Section titled “What matters when choosing”- centering feel
- axis smoothness
- grip ergonomics
- button and hat count
- extension compatibility
DIY/build considerations
Section titled “DIY/build considerations”- gimbal geometry and cam profile dominate feel
- sensor placement affects calibration stability
- longer extensions change leverage and mounting needs
Trade-offs and limitations
Section titled “Trade-offs and limitations”Sticks with lots of controls improve hands-on access, but size, weight, and mechanism complexity can make them harder to mount well.
