Joysticks

A joystick is a hand-operated flight control used for pitch and roll, often with additional buttons, hats, and triggers.

Joysticks are common in combat flight sims, helicopter setups, and general-purpose desktop flying.

  • desktop sticks
  • center-mounted sticks
  • side sticks
  • grips with twist yaw or separate rudder control

The grip moves through a gimbal or cam-based mechanism, with sensors reading axis position. The internal mechanism matters more than the shell because centering feel and smoothness have a huge effect on precision.

  • centering feel
  • axis smoothness
  • grip ergonomics
  • button and hat count
  • extension compatibility
  • gimbal geometry and cam profile dominate feel
  • sensor placement affects calibration stability
  • longer extensions change leverage and mounting needs

Sticks with lots of controls improve hands-on access, but size, weight, and mechanism complexity can make them harder to mount well.
