Steering Wheels

A steering wheel is the driver interface mounted to a wheel base. It defines grip shape, control access, diameter, and driving ergonomics.

Steering wheels are primarily used in sim racing.

  • round wheels
  • formula-style wheels
  • GT and hybrid wheels
  • rims with integrated buttons, encoders, and displays

The wheel itself does not generate force feedback. It passes input to the base and sets the shape, leverage, and button layout that affect control feel.

  • diameter and leverage
  • grip shape and hand position
  • button access
  • quick-release and mounting compatibility
  • weight, which affects some bases more than others
  • wheel weight affects inertia and base response
  • button plates, magnetic shifters, and QR systems add complexity quickly
  • electrical routing through slip rings or coiled cables needs reliability planning

A heavier or feature-rich wheel can improve usability, but it may also dull response on weaker bases or complicate DIY assembly.
